Athletes and cheerleaders, along with other members of the student body, were sold as homecoming dance dates during Student Council's 'Sell-A-Thon,' on August 29 during both lunches.

About 30 people bought dates, and THMS Student Council raised $108.

Student Body President Miranda Hinojosa said that this was the first year homecoming dates had been sold, and that the entire student body was invited to participate.

“My favorite part of (the Sell-A-Thon) is to see what these crazy kids will do when they’re out there on the carpet,” Student Body Treasurer Mariah Arriola said.

Hinojosa said that the purpose of the Sell-A-Thon was to promote the homecoming dance.

“It was necessary because normally we don’t get a lot of attendance, and it’s normally just underclassmen who go,” Hinojosa said.

Arriola said this event made it possible to recognize athletes who don’t typically get recognized and allowed for more involvement.

“People who don’t get involved have an opportunity to be involved,” Arriola said.

Junior Kiannah Fuentes chose to participate in the Sell-A-Thon and was sold for $10.

“I thought it would be fun to show a little school spirit,” Fuentes said. “(Homecoming) should be fun.”

Hinojosa thought the Sell-A-Thon  was a relatively effective.

“I think in some ways (it drew attention to the dance) but there’s always room for improvement,” Hinojosa said.
